There comes a point in time when one must take a stand. Sometimes however, the victims have less choice than those who victimize ... it's called being politically correct here .. I am not an expert on the situtation with the Guantanamo prisoners. A point you seem to not be aware of is that their guilt and roles in any crimes have not been established I think? That is the point on which people have "sympathy" for them. They were taken - from wherever- at a time when it was "politically correct" for the government to APPEAR to have "done something" about bin Laden. Which they still clearly have not. But they captured a bunch of people of the same ethnicity as bin Laden.

The eveidence against them was never presented. How can we know what is going on? As you have said in this journal here, In WWII Jpanese were also improsoned for the reason of their genetics. Simply the wrong race at the wrong time.

Recently, the US Courts have determined that there is not enough evidence to charge some of these people with crimes. And we see also that some are as young as 13. The problem with the Guantanamo situtation is the disregard for due process, Geneva Conventions and the lack of evidence/information about those people. Other things - like the use of "extreme rendition" whree people (who knows who these people are) are flown to other nations' gulag-style prisons where they can be held indefinitely and tortured. Flown there so that the "crime" does not occur on US soil. That itself is an admission of improper conduct.

It is hard for me to understand how a "love for the US" does not really mean a love for the high ideals upon which the US was founded. And that means - no secrecy of the type that you would have known in Germany during the time of the Stasi or any KGB activity. I do not know your Greens, if I did I may hate them. However many here in the US object to KGB-style behavior as the official respponse to the 911 attacks.

Bin Laden said his goal was to "destroy the American way of life". If the US public becomes comfortable with KGB-style government behavior (secret kidnappings, shadowy informers, no trials, torture, and a governmet that doesn't have to explain itself to the People ) Then bin Laden has succeeded. We will still look like Americans but not have that social structure that is TRULY Politically Correct, which is when the government obeys the laws it has created. Taliban leaders lock up who they please, no need for evidence - only their need to appear strong. That is not okay for ruling elites. Perhaps that is the thinking behind the Greens offer of amnesty for the Gitmo people.
Even our own government says there is not the evidence to try many of them in court. Being held without evidence - that is KGB.

A final thought is - even with all of the global awareness of the guilt of the Nazi war criminals, still the Nuremberg trials were held. Even with all the piles of bodies and witnesses to the holocaust, the evidence was reviewed, and trials were held. It would have been so easy to just lock them in Guantanamo, or send them in the night to secret Romanian prisons. Yet, governments then behaved in leagl, civilized and Politically Correct manners. And we can look back now on those decisions without shame, because they were not made in the dark and in secrecy. That is when peopole are free, when the laws are applied to all, not just some. If a culture locks people up with more more evidence than "you have on a headscarf" then that is not civilization.

Eichmann had a trial, and so did the others. Back then that was "The American Way", but not so now. In fact US torturers have publically stated that they learned many of the current torture techniques from the old KGB methods. If you bring KGB to a nation - perhaps after a 911 type of attack, or because of someone like bin Laden, then after bin Laden is dead and gone, the KGB will then never leave. And that KGB will do more to destroy the nation than bin Laden could have, because the KGB will do that from within.

If a culture locks people up with -> NO <- more more evidence than "you have a headscarf on" then that is not civilization.

If european culture allows people to kill woman or girls because they want not wear a scarf and live free - that is not civilzation too.

Well apparently the problem has been solved. So you can stop worrying so much about Ay-rabs. Today US officials say that no muslims like al Qaeda anymore. They are just tired of it and annoyed by it. They have changed the channel on their TVs. I think tomorrow US government will announce that muslims are now into Hannah Montana in a major way. They wear Hannah Montana t-shirts under their burqas the same way leftists wear Che Guevarra t-shirts. Bin Laden is just not as cute, so he loses teh War of Hearts and Minds. Nope, he cannot win against a Hot Bouncy Blonde from the US.

What do you mean don't make jokes? A top guy in the US government is saying in public statements that muslims are being annoyed by al Qaeda and don't think they're cool anymore. A top official who works for Condi Rice. Look at the link. It's in all the papers today.

The US government is saying the "joke" not me. Honest- George Bush makes these decisions, to say these things not sulis-minerva.
